Project Title
CADANGAN MEMBINA PUSAT
PEMINDAHAN KEKAL BENCANA (PPKB),
SK MANDALOM LAMA, TENOM, SABAH
Date
September 2025
Location
Tenom, Sabah
The Tenom Disaster Centre (Pusat Pemindahan Kekal Bencana) located in SK Mandalom Lama, Tenom, Sabah, is conceived as a resilient and multifunctional facility designed to provide safe, sustainable, and community-oriented shelter during times of natural disaster. Located in a strategically elevated area of Tenom, the centre is planned to serve as a Permanent Evacuation Facility for flood and landslide emergencies, while also functioning as a community hub for training, education, and local activities during non-emergency periods.
Architecturally, the design reflects adaptability, sustainability, and cultural relevance. The masterplan integrates modular and flexible spaces — including a medical bay, canteen, sanitation blocks, storage areas, and administration offices — enabling efficient transformation between emergency and community use.
The architectural language takes inspiration from local vernacular forms, featuring large roof overhangs, cross-ventilated spaces, and elevated structures that promote natural airflow and thermal comfort. Passive design strategies minimize energy consumption, while the use of durable, locally sourced materials enhances resilience and reduces maintenance.
Environmental considerations are central to the proposal. The site incorporates rainwater harvesting, solar readiness, permeable paving, and green landscaping to promote ecological balance and water management.
